London’s Sound Heritage

In 2018, London Metropolitan Archives became one of ten regional hubs across the UK to join the British Library’s ‘Unlocking our Sound Heritage’ project –

Funded by the Heritage Lottery (HLF), this ambitious project will aim to digitise and catalogue at-risk sound recordings to support research and greater access to audio collections located across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In London, this will include community oral histories, cultural music, urban soundscapes and academic speeches contributed by local and national institutions across the capital.

To help spread the word about this project, and its significant contribution to London history, we plan to share posts about the work we do, the collections we use, training and advice on how to look after your own sound recordings, and highlight some of the work already going on with sound from different sites across social media.
